Interview Coaching

Good at the work. Less keen on the interview?

You might be perfectly comfortable doing your job, then find yourself struggling to explain it to a panel of strangers. Suddenly there’s a lot riding on how well you answer a question.

Interviews can feel awkward, artificial and nothing like the work itself. But if you want the job, you usually have to get through one.

We’ll help you prepare, practise and give them a fair picture of what you can do. You’ll also work out what you need to learn from them.

Talk to us about interview coaching

Interview coaching is available on its own. You don’t need to have worked with us on your CV.

Interviews are strange conversations.

Promote yourself, but don’t sound boastful. Be concise, but give enough detail. Remember a good example, put it into STAR format and explain what you personally contributed. Preferably while making eye contact and looking pleased to be there.

No wonder people who are capable and articulate at work can feel quite unlike themselves in an interview.

You can’t predict every question or guarantee you’ll feel relaxed. But you can arrive with examples you know well and some practice talking them through.

What we’ll work on

Know what might be coming

You can’t predict every question, but you don’t have to prepare in the dark. We research the role and what the employer is looking for to build a bank of likely interview questions. That gives us a starting point for your preparation.

Have examples you can actually remember

The question arrives, and every useful thing you’ve ever done leaves your head.

We’ll work through your experience and choose examples that relate to the role. Then we’ll organise them using STAR: Situation, Task, Action and Result. You’ll know what context matters, how to explain your part and what to say about the outcome.

Sound like yourself

A carefully memorised answer can unravel when someone asks a slightly different question.

We’ll practise talking through your examples, responding to follow-up questions and getting your point across without losing the thread. You’ll receive practical feedback on what’s clear, where more detail would help and where you can say less.

Tackle the conversations you’re dreading

What are your salary expectations? Why are you leaving? Can we speak to your current manager?

Some questions need thought before you’re sitting in front of the panel. We can work through how to discuss pay, explain a difficult departure or respond to a reference request when your manager doesn’t know you’re looking. If you’re concerned about the reference they might give, we can talk through that too.

Decide whether you want the job

You’re allowed to have questions of your own. Useful ones, beyond whatever you can think of when they ask, “Anything you’d like to know?”

We’ll prepare questions about the work, expectations, manager, team and conditions, so you leave with more to base your decision on than whether everyone seemed nice.

Something to take with you.

You’ll receive a detailed preparation document with likely interview questions and examples from your experience, structured using STAR, along with the questions and points you want to raise.

Use it to practise beforehand or read through it on your phone on the way to the interview. A reminder of what you want to get across, while the rest of your brain is busy wondering how it’ll go.
